the puppy
'charlie'
was the star
became my christmas gift that christmas day
sixteen years
WE
were together

even 'did' the movie
'charlie and me'
after john steinbeck's best selling
nineteen sixty best seller
'travels with charlie'

it was a dog kinda day
ashley truitt was sentenced to 13 years in prison

charlie was a fear puppy
mentally unstable
i had to always keep a very close eye on him
busted once by the aspen police for biting a tourist
six weeks of house arrest but no jail time

charlie had a masters degree
was as free as any dog could be
even loved by 'natty gann'
(remember the star of that disney movie?)
sixteen years of being best buddies we were
charlie and me

maybe todays lesson is
thirteen years in jail
create a best friend for yourself
time will fly by
